THE OUTCOME
Perhaps contrary to expectation, I cannot guarantee any particular tangible outcome from my exploration. I have not planned a final project. I believe this is actually an important element of my proposal: my project’s goal is exploration, and to truly explore, I need the freedom to follow what I find intrinsically interesting and accept the opportunities that appear to me throughout the course of my journey. One of the primary advantages of doing a project this way, funded by individuals, is that I can do it with flexibility, allowing me to pursue the paths that I feel are best.
However, I'm nonetheless confident that something incredible will come out of a year looking at prison systems around the world. I am excited to see how it unfolds!
I know that writing down my experiences and keeping sort of a “field journal” will help my memory and track my experiences, so I plan to do so. I also intend to maintain a blog to organize and synthesize these experiences, through which my friends, family, and sponsors can follow my travels and learnings. I predict that at the end of my journey, I will want to share my explorations further, perhaps through presentations or papers, but I would like to leave this open-ended.
Ultimately, I think the most important outcome will be the way my own perspective develops, which I will bring to future encounters and work. I believe self-learning is significant for all people, and the process that I am embarking upon is important; in the future I would like to help reform the U.S. criminal justice system. This project will shape where I decide to go next with my life, providing new connections and insights that will influence my path.
